A moment of sheer mom-genius
If you’ve experienced a diaper blow-out in public, you know the lengths we have to go to survive these moments with as much grace as possible. One particular blow-out is forever emblazoned in my brain as the worst of all time. I was at brunch with a few of my friends (trying to have some semblance of a social life after my first baby was born).
I’ll spare you the details but let’s just say this was an ugly one, of epic proportions, and the car seat was involved. Of course, I had already used all of my extra diapers and there was not a spare onesie in sight.
When I realized what had happened, I stood frozen in the bathroom for a while – wracking my brain for solutions. While there was no delicious brunch cocktail waiting for me, I was not letting my lovely omelet or the chance for an adult conversation go to waste by leaving. Instead, I stripped my little babe down and washed her bum off under that automatic bathroom sink thingy (which kept shutting off every 3 seconds). I balled up all of the clothes and shoved them in a takeout bag. After drying her bottom under the hand dryer (and completing my internal cursing of any restroom that has only a hand dryer), I had a MacGyver moment of sheer mom GENIUS!
I took off my cardigan and fashioned it into a makeshift diaper, completing the look by tying the sleeves together in the front with my hair elastic. I lined the wiped-down car seat with my baby blanket and pulled the edges over my finally clean daughter so that she wouldn’t get chilly and headed back to my table with a feeling of pure pride at my emergency ingenuity.
When I recently told this story to a group of mom friends, we all recalled and shared some of our proudest, most nimble mom moments. Things like public diaper blow-outs have certainly made me a pretty resourceful parent (and they make for some pretty great stories, too).
So- for all the imperfect moms like me out there, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate those moments of brilliance.
